Whitehead torpedo plant at Fiume [nowadays Rijeka, Croatia] to be fully operational as soon as possible according to a CIA report dated September 1947

An item reported that a number of Russian experts visited on 28 June 1947 the former Whitehead torpedo plant at Fiume examining the machinery.(1) Except for the torpedo production were all activities to be stopped to make the necessary repairs in the plant itself possible. The intention was to get as soon as possible a monthly production of 160 torpedoes. German and Russian made machinery was to replace the ones removed by the Germans.

1. Founded in the 1850’s, joined by the British engineer Robert Whitehead in 1858 and started building large machinery for the Austrian navy. In 1864was Whitehead joined by naval captain Giovanni Biagio Luppis for building an exploding boat. On 20 December 1866 however was the first torpedo presented followed by the founding of the Torpedofabrik Whitehead&Comp. Demolished during the Second World War was the factory first named Jadran, since 1947 Aleksandar Rankovic and in 1953 renamed Engine Factory Torpedo. Around 1965/1966 ended the production of torpedoes.
