Austrian ironclad SMS Don Juan d’Austria 1874-1919


Of the Kaiser Max-class, preceded by the SMS Erzherzog Albrecht and succeeded by the SMS Tegthoff, using the engines and part of thearmour of the Don Juan d’Austria dating from 1861. Laid down by Stabilimento Tecnico, Triestino, Italy on 14 February 1874, launched on 25 October 1875, commissioned on 26 June 1876, sea trials started in 29 August 1876, stricken on 29 June 1904, converted into a barracks ship in 1905, accommodate personnel of the torpedo boats at Pola [Pula, Crotia] during the First World War and sunk in 1919.

Displacement 3.605 tons and as dimensions 73,23 (waterline)-75,87 (over all) x 15,25 x 6,15 metres or 240.3-248.9 x 50.0 x 20.2 feet. Fitted out with a single-expansion steam engine and coil fired boilers supplying 2.755ihp allowing with her single screw a speed of 13,28 knots. Her crew numbered 400 men. Armament consisted of 8-21cm/8.3” 20 cal Krupp guns, 4-9cm/3.5” 24 cal guns, 2-7cm/2.8” 15 cal landing guns, 6-4,7/1.9”cm quick firing guns, 3-4,7cm/1.9” Hotchkiss revolver guns, 2-2,5cm/0.98” guns and 4-35cm/14” torpedo tubes (1 x bow, 1 x stern, 2xbroadside).
The armour consisted of a 20,3cm/8.0” thick belt with 11,5cm/4.5” thick transverse bulkheads at the ends of the citadel with the casemate protected by 12,5cm/4.9” thick armour.
