British naval officers incorrectly treated according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad evening edition dated Friday 29 October 1909

Lord Beresford (1) asked the British Admiralty what was true dealing with the rumours that there was a policy of intimidation and favour within the British Royal Navy. As example he mentioned that two captains which were witnesses before the Naval Commission were put on half-pay. He wrote his letter last Saturday so minister Asquith (2) must have received it Monday. Until now was nothing known about an answer of the Admiralty. One of the involved officers namely captain Hubert was since 1 November detached at the course for ballistics which was according to the newspaper Daily News the usual preparation to be appointed with the command over a warship.

Notes
1. Charles William de la Poer Beresford, 1st Baron Beresford (10 February 1846-6 September 1919), also member of the parliament and who was opponent of sir John Fisher the British naval architect. He commanded in 1907-1909 the Channel Fleet but was/is not an irreproachable person Later is suggested that as a result of a minor stroke before 1907 his personality was changed dramatically and in 1909 he managed to force the Prime Minister to start an official enquiry what was going on at the British Admiralty with Fisher being First Sea Lord.
2. Herbert Henry Asquith, 1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith (12 September 1852-15 February 1928), Prime Minister in 1908-1916.
