The French navy versus the British navy at Taïti (French Polynesia) according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 12 August 1844

A French whaler brought with her tidings dated until 26 March from Papeïti at Tahiti dealing with the events there. A revolt broke out when the British war steamvessel Cormorant arrived and bringing weapons and gunpowder on shore. As soon as the governor heard of the revolt he went with the steamship Phaeton and 50 soldiers towards Teïrabou where the corvette l'Embuscade all ready was lying. Despite shooting with guns the revolting natives refused to go away. The British steamship Cormorant was ordered to leave the area and just the British yacht Basilisk with on board queen Pomare stayed on board. The frigate la Charte arrived 16 March at Papeïti coming from the Gambiers islands where the French flag was hoisted. She wanted to drop her anchors in these waters when she was ordered by the governor to embark the 200 soldiers on board and to sail towards the island Eiméo to force the Cormorant to leave and to hoist the French flag. This frigate which was part of the squadron off Valparaiso was now returned. The French force of Taïti consisted of the frigates l'Uranie and la Charte, the corvettes l'Embuscade and la Meurthe, the steamship Phaëton, 2 goelettes of war and 2 whalers and the Somme, Boussole and Bucéphale were expected to come.
