Frankfurt, 10 October. Semi official Austrian newspapers published tidings from Constantinople dated 10 September confirming the battle lost by the Turkish fleet mid August in the Channel of Samos preventing the Captain Pasha to land there. Admiral Sachturi which seemed to have the supreme command of the Greek fleet supplied 17 August more details. After some small skirmishes attacked the Turkish yesterday [=16 August] again. Around 04.30 o’clock started the gunfire by the Turkish frigates and corvettes later by the brigs and goelettes. Due to the fact that the fire ships were not prepared attacked the Greeks the Turkish with 16 ships of Spezzia and Hydra who had just arrived accompanied by two fire ships. The gunfire on both sides was quite lively with a regular Greek battle line forcing the Turkish to retreat even more when a fire ship attacked. Finally the Greeks could use their fire ships escorted by some of their warships. The fire ship commanded by Demetrius Tsapeli attacked a frigate 1st class with 16 guns on each deck off cape marine but the frigate was saved by a favourable wind and sloops which towed her into the right direction. The fire ship was lost without any success. Canaris attacked however the frigate with his frigate and set her into fire. When the fire reached the powder room exploded the frigate killing her crew of 600 men (sailors and soldiers), some Turkish at the coast and the crews of 15-20 sloops prepared for the landing. At 09.00 o’clock set Vasikioti a brig of Tunis into fire and around 11.00 o’clock managed captain Rafelia with his fire ship accompanied by another one from Spezzia to set a large corvette of Tripoli into fire. Captain Rombotsi attacked without success another large frigate but which was rescued by her sloops. Probably the Turkish lost around 2.000 men caused by the burning of these three vessels. The Greeks just counted two dead men of the fire ship of Canaris of Ipsario, one on board of Rombotsi and Tsapeli wounded his face caused by the fire.
