Japanese battleship Fuso 1911-1944 (officially stricken from the navy list 31 August 1945)

Around 1919 appareance

Of the Fuso-class with one sister ship the Yamashiro in fact a heavily altered Kongo battecruiser-class design. In 1911 was her building at the Kure Kaigun Kosho agreed, the building started 11 March 1912. She was launched at 28 March 1914 and commissioned on 5 November 1915 and like her sister ships considered as battleships concerning speed and armament superior compared with the British and American battleships. She was twice rebuilt between April 1930-May 1933 and between September 1934-Februari 1935. She was destroyed on 25 October 1944 in the battle of Surigao Strait against American naval forces.

Original figures: displacement of 29,300 long tons or 29.800 tons standard and as dimensions 202,7 x 28,7 x 9,68 meter. Figures in 1944 (after rebuilding): displacement 34,700 long tons or 35.300 tons and as dimensions 210,3 x 33,1 x9,68 meter. Her crew numbered in 1915 1.193 men increased to 1.900 men in 1944. The armament consisted in 1915 of 12-14” (6 x 2) guns, 16-6”guns and 8-3”guns and in 1944 of 12-14”guns, 14-6” guns, 8-5” guns 95-1” anti aircraft guns.

The Fuso had a displacement of 39.514 long tonnes or 39.782 tons with as dimensions 192 (between perpendiculars)-205,12m x 30,61 x 9,68 meter. The four Brown-Curtis turbines and 24 Miyabara boilers provided during the trials 46.500 shp while for actual service 40.000 shp was available allowing when she was first commissioned a speed of 22 knots increased in the second World war with another 3,4 knots due to the replacement of the oil boilers by six oil-fuel Kampon boilers. At a speed of 14 knots her range was 8.000 nautical miles. Her crew numbered 1.400 men. Her armament in the second World War consisted of 12-14"guns (4 turrets), 16-6"guns, 8-5"guns, maximum 95-1" anti aircraft guns and maximum 10-0.52"anti aircraft guns. The three floating water planes were catapulted with one catapult. The armour consisted of a 203-305mm belt, a 27-52mm deck, 100-105mm bulkheads, 203-305mm barbettes and gun turrets while the conning tower had 152-305mm armour.
