Japanese cruiser Asama 1896-1947


Ordered in the budget year 1897 was she laid down at the Armstrong Whitworth at Elswick, England 1 November 1896, launched 22 March 1898, 18 March 1899 completed and arrived that year 17 May at Yokosuka, Japan, in the Second World War were the guns removed and she was moored as at hulk at Kure, since 1 July 1942 officially as an auxiliary training vessel, decommissioned 30 November 1945 was she broken up in 1947.

She was of the Asama-class cruisers with a displacement of 9.856 tons or 0.900 long tons and the dimensions 124,36 x 20,45 x 7,43m. Her engines provided 18.000 ship allowing a maximum speed of 21,5 knots or 24,7 miles. With a speed of 12 knots/12 miles she had a range of 7.000 nautical sea miles. The crew numbered 725 men. Armed with 4-8" guns, 14-6" rapid fire guns, 12-12pdr rapid fire guns, 7-2,5 pdr rapid fire guns and finally 5-14" torpedo tubes; in 1933 were 40mm anti aircraft guns placed on the bridge added to her armament. The armour consisted of a 88-180mm main belt and a 125mm belt, while the barbettes, casemate and gun turrets had 150mm armour and the conning tower 76-360mm. Since 1 September 1921 indicated as a 1st class coastal defence vessel and since 30 March 1931 as just a coastal defence vessel.
