Paraguayan ironclad Belona 1864-1865 and Brazilian ironclad Lima Barros 1865-1905


Ordered by Paraguay as the Belona in 1864 but taken over by Brazil when Paraguay was not able to pay for her. Laid down at Laird Brothers, Birkenhead, England with yard number 327in 1864, launched on 21 December 1865, completed on 3 April 1866, stricken on 8 May 1894 and finally broken up in 1905.

With a displacement of 1.732 tons and as dimensions 61,0 (between perpendiculars) x 11,6 x 3,9 metres or 200.2’ x 38.2’ x 12.8’. The 2 trunk steam engines supplied via 2 shafts 2.100 ihp allowing a speed of 12 knots. Rigged like a barque. Her crew numbered 170 men (included officers). The armour consisted of a wrought iron made waterline belt with a thickness of 7,6cm/3” ends)-11,4cm/4.5” (amidships) with the gun turrets protected by 11,4cm/4.5”. The armament consisted of 2x2-120pd Whitworth rifled muzzle loading guns. An enlarged version of the river monitor Bahia.
