Dutch merchant schooner Anna saved by Swedish torpedo boat Svensksund according to the Dutch newspaper Zierikzeesche Nieuwsbode dated 23 January 1918

The Dutch merchant schooner Anna was still stuck in an ice field at Kalmarsund and it was feared that she was to be beaten to pieces by the ice. The Swedish navy send the torpedo boat Svensksund (1) which was also a powerful icebreaker together with a another torpedo boat to create an open fairway for the Anna. The latter was underway from Sundsvall to Amsterdam with a cargo of commodities destined for the paper industry.

1. Conway’s All the world’s fighting ships 1922-1946 mentioned a sloop called Svensksund launched on 30 September 1891 with a displacement of 415 tons, since 1942 serving as survey vessel, stricken in 1957 and sold in 1962. Jane’s Fighting Ships 1919 supplies more details. She was armed with 2-6pdr guns, had a speed of 12½ knots and a coal bunker capacity of 50 tons. Her displacement was 394 tons. She served as a minelayer, an icebreaker or as a repair ship depending on the seasons and for which task she was needed. According to Jane’s Fightings Ship 1944/1945 was her displacement 360 tons and her dimensions 124 2/3 x 26 x 12, consisted the armament of 2-5,7cm guns and 1-2cm gun. Allowed the 400 hp a speed of 12 knots and was her coal bunker capacity 50 tons. Although officially rated as gunboat served she as a surveying vessel.
