Belonged to the Braunschweig-class numbering five units with as sister ships the Elsass, Hessen, Preussen and Lothringen. Preceded by the Wittelsbach-class and succeeded by the Deutschland-class.

Laid down at the Germania Werft at Kiel, Germany October 1901, launched 20 December 1902, commissioned 15 October 1904 with as building costs 23,983,000 German marks, rebuilt in 1921-1922 at Wilhelmshaven (a year later was her bridge enlarged) and serving until 1926 as a coastal defence ship, stricken 31 March 1931 becoming a hulk at Wilhemshafen and a year later broken up.

With a displacement of 14,394 tons were her dimensions 419 x 73 x 27”. The three 3 cylinder vertical triple expansions engines added by 14 coal-fired cylinders supplied 16,000 ihp and while driving 3 screws allowed a speed of 33 knots. With a speed of 10 knits had she a range of 5,200 nautical miles. Her crew numbered 743 men. The armament consisted of 2x2-11 guns, 14-6.7” guns, 1803.5” guns and 6-18” in the hull submerged torpedo tubes. The armour consisted of a ‘.6” deck, a 3.9-10.0” belt and 9’8” gun turrets, the latter placed one for and one aft.
