Turkish torpedo boat exploded during trials according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch Nieuwblad dated 29 May 1895

Kiel, 27 May. That afternoon was an explosion on board of a torpedo boat which was being built at the yard Germania at Eckernförde for account of Turkey. Her deck was completely torn open and six heavily men were brought to Eckernförde. The steamship Hollmann of Kiel helped bringing the torpedo boat towards Kiel. It was then clear that 7 men were killed and 12 heavily wounded all labourers of the yard. The same newspaper supplied the next day more details. The explosion during the trial was caused by lacking water in one boiler. Her captain was torn and thrown away. One of the severely wounded died in the last night the others were expected to recover. One men was still missing. The yard directors, engineers and a Turkish officer which were on board during the trial were on the aft deck when the boiler exploded and were unharmed. Another Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad evening edition dated 30 May confirmed the explosion of the boiler. The torpedo boat had a medium speed of 23 knots and all ready steamed a distance of four miles when the explosion occurred. The foremast, bridge and the medium part of the deck were completely washed away. The morning edition of the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 30 May supplied even more details. The engineer Pöhls was still missing. The Turkish officer was named Mehemed Ali. Five men were immediately killed and 7 severe wounded of which was died. In the beginning was also a stoker missing but he was found black being asleep in a sty next to the engine room after a wedding party and notifying nothing of what happened!
