British 2nd class cruiser HMS Gladiator 1896-1909

This cruiser with a load displacement of 5,750 tons and dimensions 320 (between perpendiculars)-342 (over all) x 57'6"x 20 was laid down at the Portsmouth Dockyard in January 1896, launched 18 December of the same year and completed in April 1899.. Due to a collision with the steamship St. Paul sunk she off the Isle of Wight 25 April 1908. Salvaged in August 1908 was she sold 5 May 1909. Of the Arrogant-class with as sister ships the Arrogant, Furious and Vindictive. Their building was ordered by the 1895-1896 Program.

The armament consisted of 4-6" quick firing guns, 6-4.7" quick firing guns, 8-12pdrs, 3-3pdr quick firing guns, 5 machineguns and 3-18" torpedo tubes. If necessary they were to use ramming tactics when attacking so they were also fitted out with a ram and could turn in a circle of 380 yards. The 2 shaft 3 cylinder engines and 18 Belleville boilers supplied 10,000 ihp allowing a forced speed of 19 knots. The coal bunker capacity was 1.175 tons. The armour consisted of a 1,5-3" thick deck, 2"at the sides forward, 9" conning tower, 4,5" gun shields while the engine hatch was protected by 4".

The Dutch magazine De Prins dated 9 May 1908 page 223 published a photo of her wreck mentioning that she sunk within 20 minutes with just a few victims among her crew of 480 men. The collision found place during a snow storm.
