Copenhagen, 2 February. Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein who commanded the forces in Norway appealed with utmost emphasis the fitting out of privateers to compensate the loss of the Danish fleet and which were to harass the merchant shipping of the enemy.(1) Gunboats would in the mean time protect the coasts. The government permitted to supply these privateers with all means such as weapons and ammunition as was yet available.
Note
1. The British fleet attacked 16 August-5 September 1807 Copenhagen and captured besides a large number of other warships Danish 18ships of the line! The evocation of the prince was indeed answered and apparently 600 privateers were fitted out. See for instance the publication Kaperfahrt of Skibsfart 1807-1814 written by J.N. Tonesssen and Kay Larsen, Danmarks Kapervæsen 1807-1814, Copenhagen 1972.
