Austria and her building ships of the line according to Dutch newspapers in 1852

The newspaper Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant dated 19 February published an item that from Trieste the arrival of the Austrian fleet after two months cruising was reported. The fleet had not gone farther as the coasts and ports of Istria and Dalmatia while the Austrian government just want to protect her own coasts and had no intention to be elsewhere an naval power of any importance. This intention was the main reason for not building ships of the line but just frigates and steamboats. Foreign sailors didn’t have much chance anymore to be enlisted by the Austrian navy. The newspaper Middelburgsche Courant dated 21 February confirmed this item.

The newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 29 March referred to some North German newspapers reporting that according to a secret article of the Vienna Treaty Austria had no permission to built ships of the line. Especially England was opponent of this article. These rumours were not true. The yard of Muggia near Trieste which was to be founded was just destined to be used for the building of large ships of the line. The daily edition dated 23 August 1852 published an item dated Vienna 17 August reporting that in Trieste the order was received to complete the building of the Arsenal at Pola in 1853 and immediately to start with the building of the new ships of the line. The newspaper De Tijd dated 23 August confirmed this item.
