The German newspaper Frankfurter Zeitung reported that the gunboat Venus of the cabinet in Nicaragua destroyed the gunboat Omotepe belonging to the rebels causing the drowning of 100 men. The well fitted out Venus with a crew of 400 men pursued the Omotepe which tried to escape but was destroyed off Punta Gorda. (1)

In the evening edition of the newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated Saturday 5 February was an item dated Managua 4 February published reported that the gunboat Omotepe of the rebels on last Thursday during 20 minutes bombarded Greytown before forced to retreat when gunfire of coastal batteries damaged her. Conway’s All the World’s Fighting Ships 1906-1921 still mentioned a Ornotepe in 1919 just like Jane‘s Fighting Ships 1919 although calling her the auxiliary Omotepe.
