When Thomas Francis Gordon described Poughkeepsie village in his Gazetteer of the state of New York (Philadelphia, 1836) he mentioned on page 432 the Poughkeepsie Whaling Company with a capital of 200,000 dollars and with two ships at sea and the Dutchess Whaling Company with a capital of 200,000 dollars and two ships at sea. Another effect of these companies was the founding of a new shipyard and dock with a water front of 450 feet.
