An item reported that the Dutch steamship Werkendam of the Holland Amerika Lijn was sold to Russia to be converted into a transport for the China expedition.(1)

1. Build in 1881 at the shipyard of Harland&Wolff at Belfast with a gross tonnage of 3,657 tons and as dimensions 410.3 x 39 feet was she originally build for a British company. The same year was her maiden voyage for the American Line and two years was she chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Company, in 1885 serving for the Guion Line became she in 1899 property of the Dutch shipping company Holland Amerika Lijn. This owner sold her again in 1900 to the Chinese Eastern Railway in which service she was renamed Harbin and finally sunk by the Russians in 1904 at Port Arthur. The newspaper Het nieuws van den dag dated 19 November 1889 reported that she was completely steel-build, fast and fitted out with beautiful accommodations for the passengers. It was assumed that she was commissioned in February 1890 as the Werkendam.
