The arrival of the Norwegian whaler Kosmos at Vlaardingen according to the Schiedamsche Courant dated 12 May 1930

An item reported that in the afternoon a day earlier the Norwegian steamship Kosmos (1) arrived alongside the mooring  of the Nieuwe Matex N.V. at Vlaardingen in the presence of a large number of spectators. She was described as the largest tanker and whaler of the world with a length of 165 metres, a beam of 24,5 metres, a draught of 10,5 metres and a measurement of 22,500 tons/17,801 register tonnage. She transported a cargo of whale-oil of 19,333 tons and a value of around ƒ 6.500.000 Dutch guilders, the largest quantity ever brought into the Netherlands. Six tugs which were waiting for her brought her to the mouth of the Nieuwe Haven where she anchored after having turned off Wilton. Directly was started with pumping the whale-oil into tanks on the shore. On shore were tanks available with a total capacity of 60,000M2, soon to be doubled. The firm Nieuwe Matex started not earlier a 1 October 1929 with the construction of the mooring and the establishment of the areas.

1. The website http://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?136367 mentioned a Kosmos build in 1929 at the shipyard of Workman, Clark&Co. Limited at Belfast with yard number 505 for the Hvalfangerselskapet Kosmos  A/S. The yard also manufactured the quadruple expansion engine of 988 nhp allowing a speed of 13 knots.. Her dimensions were 168,9 x 23,5 x 15,1 metres with a gross tonnage of 17,801 tons. Steel build. IMO mo. 5607021. On 26 September 1940 destroyed by the German raider Thor around 200 miles South east of Ascension Island while underway from Table Bay to Curacao.
