An item reported that a spokesman of the US navy stated while visiting Groton (Connecticut) that the navy was building submarines compared to which the nuclear submarine Nautilus more or less a small T-ford was. Within short time were submarines available with the size of cruisers able to hit every location in enemy territory.(1)

Jane’s Fighting Ships 1958-1959 for instance mentioned that at the shipyard of the Electric Boat Company at Groton a very large nuclear powered radar picket submarine with a displacement of 8,000 tons (submerged) was build conform the 1956 Naval Appropriations. She was laid down on 29 May 1956 and the largest submarine (with a length of 447”0) until then build.
