Warships build at the shipyard Kon. Mij De Schelde at Flushing since 1876: torpedo boat XII of 1878

Steel built torpedo boat XII, yard number 13, ordered 31 May 1878, built on molds without that a keel was laid down, launched 18 August 1879, trials and handed over 11 October 1879, after 1907 training vessel, between 1911 and 1913 used as target and broken up in 1913. With a displacement of 29,5 tons and as dimensions 24,15 (over all) x 3,15 x 1,61 and a hold of 2,17 metres or 79’2¾”x 10’4” x 5’3 3/8”and 7’1½”. Armed with a spar torpedo and 1-3,7 cm gun and a crew which numbered 10 men. Coal bunker capacity 4 tons. The engine supplied 250-350 (500 revs) ihp allowing a trial speed of 17 knots

The newspaper Vlissingse Courant dated 12 May published an item dated the 11th reporting that the yard received the order to built a torpedo boat.

The newspaper Vlissingse Courant dated Sunday 27 October 1878 referred to an item in another newspaper the Middelburgse Courant of last Tuesday dealing with her building. In the latter newspaper was announced that her keel was laid down but that was not correct according to the first newspaper. A torpedo boat had no keel so she could not be laid down. The journalist should have written that with her building was started.

The newspaper Het Zuiden dated Thursday 21 August 1879 reported that the Monday before a torpedo vessel successfully was launched and ready to depart. She was to start within some days her official trials on the roads off Texel. Her engines and further equipment was manufactured at the De Schelde. Her dimensions and quality was similar to the one bought from the British firm Thornycroft at London.

The newspaper Zierikzeesche Nieuwsbode dated Saturday 23 August published an item dated Flushing 20 August reported that the same day just like a day earlier successful trials were executed on the channel with the torpedo vessel. The distance between Flushing and Middelburg was done in elf minutes in stead of the usual sixty minutes. The Middelburgsche Courant dated Thursday 2 October published an item dated Flushing 30 September reported that the torpedo boat on the Saturday before departed for her official trial to the Nieuwediep. She steamed in four hours from Veere to Dordrecht despite not using maximum speed.
