The Hudson Whaling Company according to the Naval Journal of July 1833

Page 350: “From the New-York Observer. Messrs. Editors. It will be gratifying to your readers to learn, that the James Monroe left this place today on a whaling voyage, as a temperance ship. She truly a noble vessel, and is manned by a fine enterprising group of young men. This is the ninth ship which the Hudson Whaling Company have sent out. It is to be hoped, that the temperance principle which this and some other of the companys ships have adopted, will prove so decidedly advantageous, that henceforth ardent spirit, that deadliest foe to reason, will neither be desired nor admitted. On the evening previous to her departure, religious services were performed on board. The Presbyterian Clergyman officiated. He spoke from the words of the apostle, " which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast." There was fixed and serious attention. This ship in well furnished with books and other religious publications.May he who holds the winds in his fist, and the waters in the hollow of his hand, give those winds and wares charge concerning her safety; and above all may He guard her young and interesting crew from vice, and guide them in the way of everlasting life. Hudson April 20th 1833.
