Trials of Greece tanker Socombel at Schiedam According to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 7 January 1930

An item reported that on Saturday the trials of the steam tanker Socombel were successful. She was launched at the shipyard Scheepsbouw Maatschappij “Nieuwe Waterweg” at Schiedam by the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij for the S.A. Socombel Transports at Athens in November 1929. The newspaper Voorwaarts dated the 6th reported that she was classified as Lloyds class 100 A.I. carrying petroleum in bulk. The loading capacity of 2,300 was with a draught of 17’0”. There were eight main tanks and 8 summer cargo tanks. The cabins for the captain and the steersmen were situated in a deckhouse amidships, the accommodations for the engineers and civil personal on the aft deck while the sailors slept in the poop. The steering apparatus, anchor spil and loading winch were all driven by steam.

The newspaper Het Vaderland dated 27 November 1929 published an item dated Rotterdam the 26th reporting her launching that day by Mrs. Moreau. She had a loading capacity of around 2,300 tons. The newspaper Voorwaarts dated the 26th supplied more details. Her main dimension  246’ (over all) x 40;  (over trusses) x 29’6” (hold below upper deck) and a loading capacity of around 2,300 ton. She was fitted out with a triple expansion engine of circa 1,050 ihp.

The website http://www.shipmotions.nl/RDM/RDM/RDM-165.html mentioned that her building was ordered by the Compagnie Financiere Belge des Pettrol/S.A. Francaise Socombel-Transport de Marseille and used by the la Societé Anonyme Socombel-Transport at Athhens. Her triple expansion supplied 234 hp allowing a speed of 10,5 knots. With a gross tonnage of 1,646 tons, a deadweight of 2,238 tons and a twvp. Of 3,598 tons and as dimensions 72,20 x 12m20 x 5,20 metres and a hold of 5,80 metres. She was later renamed Bivona, in the Second World War seized by Italy and sunk by the British submarine Unrivalled on 19 April 1943.
