An item dated Washington 1 May reported that admiral Forrest Sherman commander in chief of the US navy operations would inform that day the house of representatives of the availability of the radiographic controlled missiles. The department of navy was prepared to pay 40.000.000 dollar to rebuild a battle cruiser for the necessary experiments.(1) According to Sherman was the new weapon mainly to be used for air defence. Further more intended the navy to launch the first nuclear submarine three years after the Senate approved the needed budget.
Note
1. There is a possibility that this was one of the units of the Alaska-class which were battle cruisers of very large cruisers. The Hawaii (CB-3) was intended to be converted into a guide missile cruiser something what was never realized. Another possibility is the USS battleship Mississippi (BB-41) which after her conversion into an auxiliary ship and since 15 February 1946 indicated as the AG-128 and used to test new weapons and solve gunnery problems. She was also involved in the guide missiles experiments and on 28 January 1953 was with success a Terrier missile fired from her.
