British destroyer HMS Glasgow (D88) 1974-2005 (2009)


A type 42 destroyer laid down at the shipyard of Swan Hunter, Tyne and Wear on 16 May 1974, launched on 14 April two years later, commissioned on 25 May 1977 and decommissioned on 1 February 2005. Four years later brought to Turkey to be broken up.

With a displacement of 8,820 tonnes were her dimensions 410’x 47’x 19’ or 125 x 14,3 x 5,8 metres. The Combined Gas or Gas turbines (4 Rolls Royce (2xOlympus TM3B and 2xTyne) supplied via two shafts 36 MW allowing a speed of 30 knots. Her crew numbered 276 men. She was armed with 1-4.5”/11.4cm gun and 2 Sea Dart surface-to-air missile launcher and could carry with her a Lynx HMA8 helicopter.
