German and Italian navies cooperating according to the Dutch newspaper Bataviaasch nieuwsblad dated 19 June 1939

An item dated Berlin 17 June reported that the German grand admiral Raeder (1) should meet the Italian under secretary of navy Casanare (2) on Tuesday the 20th to discuss the problems during the cooperation between the German and Italian navies. According to the rumours were not just tactical problems to be discussed but also a close cooperation in times of war.

1. Erich Johann Albert Rader (24 April 1876-6 November 1960), grand admiral since 1939. In 1943 replaced by Karl Dönitz as leader of the German navy and was after the Second World War during the Nuremberg Trials sentenced to life in prison but was released on 26 September 1955 caused by his health problems
2. Domenico Casanare (20 July 1876 Genoa-2 November 1966 Roma), admiral and since 1934 until [November] 1940 chief of staff of the Italian navy at the same time under secretary of navy.
