Independents claimed captured of Spanish frigate Esmearlda according to the Dutch newspaper according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 7 September 1818

An item dated Madrid, 12 August reported that the frigate Lantoro (former British East Indiaman Windham) of the Independents fought with the Spanish frigate Esmeralda. The Independents claimed that they captured the frigate although the Spanish claimed that they killed 30 men including captain O’Brien when the came on board of the Esmeralda.
