British navy responsible for building and repairing merchant ships according to the Dutch newspaper De Gooi- en Eemlander dated 1 February 1940

An item reported that the British premier Chamberlain (1) announced in the British House of Commons that from 1 February onwards the Department of Navy was responsible for building and repairing merchant ships.

1. Arthur Neville Chamberlain (18 March 1869 Birmingham-9 November 1940 Highfield Park, Heckfield), member of the conservatives, prime minister 28 May 1937-10 May 1940. He was succeeded by Winston Churchill lacking support of the Labour and Liberal parties. Chamberlain is best known for his cautious diplomacy dealing with Nazi Germany although his decision to support Germany if it was attacked by Germany draw England into what would became the Second World War.
