The navies of Austria, Greece and Turkey according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 13 June 1826

Frankfurt, 8 June. The local newspaper Journal published a private letter of Smyrna which mentioned that the Turkish fleet, which was just fitted out at Constantinople, was to depart soon to join the force commanded by the Capitan Pasha. The newspaper Spectateur Oriental of Smyrna reported that the Turkish fleet indeed left Constantinople, but that a beautiful ship of the line, commanded by Achmet-effendi, was lost when she struck the rocks of Scutari. This was the third ship he lost with the same cause. Although the sultan protected him twice, the common opinion was that now he could escape his punishment.

Trieste, 30 May. According to the newspaper l’Osservatore Triestino continued the Greek privateers with plundering and capturing Austrian merchant ships. There were several examples like an Austrian ship coming from Cyprus brought up at Biatto where her cargo considered being captured. Although the ships was declared free at Napoli thanks to the mediation of the Austrian consul, the amount of 5.000 piasters was taken in exchange for a declaration and the money disappeared in the exchequer of the Greek government as a compensation for the Greek goelette Aspasia and another Greek ship, captured by the Austrians. The Marquis de Paulucci, supreme commander of the Austrian navy hoisted 27 May his flag on board of the frigate Bellona and intended to sail towards Smyrna to pursue Greek privateers. Southwards of Zante was a large steamboat sighted coming from the West and which was believed to be part of the expedition commanded by Cochrane.
