According to a telegram from Madrid dated 29 May was a Spanish squadron of 2 ships of the line, 3 frigates, 2 corvettes and 4 steamships destined towards the Gulf of Mexico. This departure was caused by the tiding received at Madrid that the Mexican Cortes intended to neglect an earlier agreement with Spanish creditors and seized the issued obligations. The Bredasche Courant dated 5 June confirmed this latter item.
