This class served within the US navy between the 1960’s and 2004 when they were replaced by the Los Angeles, Seawold and Virginia classes. The Sturgeon-class was herself a lengthened and improved Thresher/Permis-class design. The Sturgeons were built by several shipyards between 1963 and 1975. With a displacement of 3.698 tons/3.640 long tons (surfaced)-4.714 tons/4.640 tons (surged) were the dimensions 89,08(for the short hull version, the long hull was 3 metres or 10 feet longer, the USS Parche was even 122metres or 401 feet long due to her fitting out with cable tapping equipment) was 10 x 9,65 metres or 202.3 x 31.8 feet. Fitted out with a S5W Pressurized water reactor and 2x11,2 MW steam turbines allow to achieve a speed of 15 (surfaced)-26 (submerged) knots. The test depth was 400 metres or 1.320 feet. The crew numbered 103 men. The armament consisted of 4-53.3cm/21” torpedo tubes amidships, 4 Harpoon missiles or maximum eight Tomahawk missiles instead. When used for mine laying tasks were the torpedoes replaced by mines. 28 unites with the short hull and another 9 units with the long hull. The Narwal and Glenard P. Lipscomb although fitted with a hull based on the Sturgeon-design were modified to be used for experiments.
