Goethals ordered to supervise building of 1.000 American cargo ships according to the Dutch newspaper The Tribune dated 13 April 1917

An item reported that the American president Wilson (1) asked Goethals (2) the man responsible for realizing the Panama Canal to supervise the building of 1.000 wood ships for the trade abroad.

George Washington Goethals (29 June 1858 Brooklyn, New York, USA-21 January 1928 New York City, USA), army officer and engineer, appointed in 1907 as chief engineer of the Panama Canal, which was completed in 1914. He was in 1917 appointed as manager of the Emergency Fleet Corporation (also known as the War Shipping Board).
