Dutch flotilla vessel annex gunboat Hr. Ms. Johan Maurits van Nassau 1930-1940

Improved design of the Dutch gunboats Zr. Ms. Flores and Soemba. Especially built for service in the Dutch West Indies. Tender by the shipyard Kon. Mij. De Schelde, Vlissingen, Netherlands registered on 8 December 1930, contracted delivery date was 30 June 1932, ordered on 19 December 1930, contract signed on 24/31 December 1930, building administration started on 3 June 1931, laid down on the south slip on 13 July 1931, in the thrushes on 22 February 1932, first armour plate fitted on 22 April 1932, first boiler placed on 7 July 1932, launched by Mrs. V.d. Stad-Meijer on 20 August 1932, berthed trial 18 and 20 January 1933, docked between 25-28 January 1933, technical trial between 6-10 February 1933, official trial on 9 February 1933, delivered to the Royal Netherlands Navy on 5 April 1933, departed towards Den Helder, Netherlands on 12 April 1933, departed on 29 June 1933 towards the Dutch West Indies, served there for several years until returning to Europe where she was used for escort duties during the Spanish Civil War before returning home. When the German forces attacked the |Netherlands on 10 May 1940 was she lying at Vlissingen. She managed to destroy one of the German planes lying mines in the river Schelde. The same afternoon was she ordered to go to Hoek van Holland, Netherlands by after her arrival there ordered to go back. She was forced to stay there over night with a disabled screw when strangled in the anchor cable of a buoy. From there ordered to go to Den Helder, Netherlands. She supported on 14 May the Dutch forces at Kornwerderzand, Netherlands when German forces intended to go via the Afsluitdijk towards Den Helder. This was however prevented. Later that same day when she tried to escape towards England was she attacked by German aircraft off Callantsoog, Netherlands and sunk. Of her crew died 17 men.

Displacement 982 (when launched)-1.537 (Washington displacement)-1.750 ton (with a draught of 3,75 metres). Dimensions 76 (between perpendiculars)-78,65 (over all) x 11,60 x 1,875/3,060 (when launched) 3,75 x 6,45 (hold below upperdeck) metres or 249’4”-258’0½”x 38”0.75”x 12’4”x 21’2”. Her crew numbered 127 men. The armament consisted of 3-15cm L/50 no. 8 guns, 2-4cm guns and 4-12,7mm machineguns. The armour consisted of a 2,5 (middle)-5 (sides) cm thick deck with the conning tower protected by 2,5cm. Two triple expansion engines numbers 427 and 428 and 4 Schelde-Yarrow water tube boilers nos. 195-198 delivering a design horsepower of 2.100 hp at 165 rpm allowing a design speed of 15 knots. Two screws with 3 fixed blades. Partly electrically welded.
