French mine laying cruiser Pluton 1928-1939


Laid down at the Arsenal de Lorient, France on 16 April 1928, launched on 10 April 1919m commissioned on 25 January 1932, converted into a gunnery training ship, reconverted into a minelayer in 1939, sent to Casablanca, French Morocco on 1 September 1939 to lay there a minefield, on 2nd September was this order cancelled and when she was disembarking her still-fuzed mines destroyed by an explosion on 13 September 1939. The wreck was broken up starting in October 1952 and finished by July 1953.

Building costs 102.671.658 French francs. Could be used as a transport with a capacity of a 1.000 men. Displacement 5.300 (standard)-6.214 (full load) tons and as dimensions 152,4 (over all) x 15,5 x 5,2 metres or 500.4 x 50.10 x 17.1 feet. The 2 geared steam turbines and 4 small tube boilers supplied 57.000 shp allowing a speed of 30 (design)-31,4 (knots)knots and with a speed of 14 knots and a fuel oil bunker capacity of 11.50 tons a range of 4.510 (reality)-7.770 (design) nautical miles. Her crew numbered 513 men. The armament consisted of 4x1-13,8cm/5.4” /40cal Modèle 1923 guns, 10-3,7cm /50cal Modèle 1925 anti aircraft guns, 6x2-0,8cm/0.315” Hotchkiss M1914 machineguns and 220-270 mines. Original to be fitted outw with 2x1-20,3cm/8”guns, 4-7,5xm/2.95” anti aircraft guns and 4-3,7cm/1.46” anti aircraft guns.
