German fleet divided over the Allies according to the Dutch newspaper De West dated 8 June 1920
An item reported that the fate of the former Germany navy was for a long period uncertain. While the United Kingdom wanted to destroy her completely, was France interested in dividing the ships over the allies. The French proposal was accepted and the United Kingdom was to get 6 battleships and 124 submarines, France one battleship and 38 submarines, Japan 3 battleships and Italy 7 submarines. Italy was not amused with the small number of ships she received an demanded a larger portion in the war retribution German had to pay the Allies. There was still another possibility, namely to compensate Italy with more ships of what was left of the Austrian-Hungarian navy.
