Several navies interested in transporting torpedo boats by rail transport according to the magazine Mitteilungen aus dem Gebiete des Seewesens dated 1889 no. 1

An item reported that several countries like the USA, Denmark, Russia and France were interested in transporting torpedo boats by rail transport over land. In this manner it would be within an accepted limited time to achieve a transport over a long distance. France and Russia already had experiences with this rail transport. France transported a torpedo boat with a displacement of 38 (empty)-50 (transport prepared) tons and as dimensions 33 x 3,25 x 2,74 metres from Toulon, France towards Cherbourg, France although with some difficulty. The French train moved just by daylight and was stopped in the night, achieving a distance if 647 miles in 4 days. According to this experiment was it possible if train and wagons were available to transport a 33 metres torpedo boat which was docked at Toulon to load within 24 hours and to have 24 hours after arrival completely fitted out for service.
Russia transported in August 1885 50 torpedo boats with a displacement of 21-28 tons and as dimensions 22,9 x 2,7 or 75’ x 9’ by rail transport and via canals from the Baltic Sea towards the Black Sea.
