US Navy attacked with success Nipe Bay, Cuba according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 23 July 1898

An item dated New York, USA 22nd referred to tidings from admiral Sampson reporting that the expedition (1) towards the Nipe Bay [Cuba] was successful  although that due to lacking of enough time the mines not were removed. The Spanish cruiser Jorge Juan (2) which defended the harbour was destroyed. The American expeditionary force suffered none losses.

2. In fact a sloop commanded by lieutenant Benigno Espósito y Peña. Launched at the naval shipyard at La Seyne, France in 1876 and sunk on 21 July 1898. Of the Jorge Juan-class with an armament of 2-15,7cm/6.2 guns, 2-7,5cm guns and 2 machineguns.
