Italian battleship Sardegna 1884-1923

Of the Re Umberto-class consisting of the Re Umberto, Sardegna and Sicilia, although the Sardegna was considered to be a subclass. Preceded by the Ruggiero di Lauria class and succeeded by the Ammiraglio di Saint Bon class. Designed by Benedetto Brin.

Laid down at the La Spezia Naval Shipyard, Italy on 24 October 1884, launched on 20 September 1890, completed on 16 February 1895, harbour defence ship at Brindisi, Italy since 1917, guard ship at Taranto since June 1918, active served off Constantinople, Turkey between 7 November 1919-5 April 1922, stricken on 4 January 1923 and broken up.

Displacement 13.641 (normal)-15.426 (full load) tons and as dimensions 130,73 (over all) x 23,44 x 8,84 metres or 428’9” x 76’9”x 29.0’. The machinery consisted of 2 triple expansion steam engines and 18 coal fired cylindrical fire-tube boilers supplying 22.800 ihp allowing with the two screws a speed of 20,3 knots. Crew numbered 794 men. The armour consisted of a belt with a thickness of 10,2cm/4”, a 7,62cm/3” thick deck and with the barbettes and conning tower protected by respectively 34,9cm/13.75” and 30,2cm/11.88”. The armament consisted of 2x2-34,3cm/13’5“ /30 guns (fore and aft), 8x1-15,2cm/6” /40 al guns, 16x1-11,9cm/4.7” (mounted in casemates in the upper deck), 20-5,7cm/2.2”, 10x1-3,7cm/1.5” guns and 5x1-45cm/17.7” surfaced torpedo launchers. After 1912 was her main armament not changed but the secondary armament removed and replaced by 4-7,6cm/3” anti aircraft guns and 2 anti aircraft machine guns.
