French ironclad battleship Hoche 1880-1913


Building ordered on 3 August 1880, launched by Chantier naval Lorient on 29 September 1886, completed in January 1890, modernized including replacing the aft armoured mast by a pole mast between September 1894-April 1895, again modernized/refitted including replacement of boilers and engines between 1899-1892, decommissioned in April1908, disarmed on 1 January 1910 and sunk while used as a gunnery target for the Jauréguiberry and the Pothuau on 2 December 1913.Displacement 12.150 tons and as dimensions 98 x 21,2 x 7,9 metres or 322 x 70 x 26 feet. With the 9.700 shp delivered by 8 boilers and reciprocating engines was a speed of 16 knots. Crew numbered 650 men. The armour consisted of 46cm/18” thick belt, 8cm/3” thick deck with he bridge and barbettes protected by respectively 6cm/2” and 40cm/16”. The armament consisted of 2x1-34cm/13.4”/28 cal Modèle 1881 guns, 2x1-27,4cm/10.8” /28 cal Modèle 1881 guns, 12x1-13,8cm/5/5” /45 cal Modèle 1893 guns and 4-45cm torpedo tubes.
