Part of the Jingei-class consisting of the Jingei and Chogei. This class would originally to have a displacement of 14.500 tons which was decreased as a result of the limitations of the Washington Naval Treaty.
Built under the 1920 Fiscal Year. Laid down by Mitsubishi Nagasaki Shipyards on 16 February 1922, launched on 4 May 1923, completed on 30 August 1923, modernized at Sasebo Naval Arsenal since November 1934 including adding new ballast tanks and big pumps, added to the Training Fleet being not capable to support the Kaidai-class submarines, beached northwest of Naha after she was torpedoed by the American submarine USS Scabbardfish, attacked by Allied aircraft and sunk on 10 October 1944, stricken on 10 November 1944, refloated in September 1952 and broken up at Tobata-ku, Kitakyushu in 1953.
Displacement 5.243 (standard)-7.801 (trial)-14.500 (originally planned) tons and as dimensions 123,00 (waterline)-125,40 (over all) x 16,21 x 6,28 metres or 403.7-411.5 x 53’2.4”x 20’7.4”feet. Machinery consisted o 2 Parson geared turbines and 6 Kampon coal/oil fired boilers supplying via 2 shafts 7.500 shp allowing a speed of 16 knots and with a speed of 14 knots a range of 10.400 nautical miles. Crew numbered 399 men. Able to transport 40 torpedoes and 1.700 tons fuel. Her armament consisted of 4-14cm/5.5” cal 50 3rd Year Type naval guns, 2x8cm/3.1” cal 40 3rd Year Type naval guns and 7,7mm machineguns. Between 1927-1942 she could carry a floatplane with her for which a derrick and deck were available. After the modernisation starting in 1934 was her displacement 6.340 (standard)-8,421 (trial) tons and as dimensions 123,47 (waterline) x 17,15 x 6,60 metres or 405.1 x 56.3 x 21.8 feet. Her armament then consisted of 4-14cm/5.5” cal 50 3rd Year Type naval guns, 2-8cm/3.1” cal 40 3rd Year Type naval guns, 2-2,5cm Type 96 anti aircraft guns and 4-1,3cm Type 93 anti aircraft guns.
