British steam propelled submarine HMS K 13 1915-1917 and K 22 1917-1926


Of the K-class. Ordered in August 1915, launched by Fairfield Shipbuilders, Glasgow, Scotland on 11 November 1915, sunk in Gareloch, Argyll, Scotland with 80 men (including shipyard personnel) of which just 48 were rescued on 29 January 1917, salvage was finally successful on 15 March, repaired and renamed K 22  and sold to be broken up in Sunderland on 11 6 December 1926. She was sunk due to four ventilators and the engine room hatch left open.

Displacement 1.980 (surfaced)-2.566 (submerged) tons and as dimension 103 x 8,08 x 6,38 metres or 339 x 26.6 x 20.11 feet. The machinery consisted of 2 geared steam turbines and twin oil-fired Yarrow boilers supplying 10.500shp, 4 1.440hp electric motors and 1-800hp Vickers diesel generator for charging the batteries while surfaced. Speed 24 (surfaced)-8 (submerged) knots. Surfaced range 700 nautical miles/m24 knots-12.500 nautical miles/10 knots and submerged 40/4-8/8. Crew numbered 59 men including 6 officers. Original class armament 6-45cm/18” torpedo tubes (4 beam, 4 bow, 2 deck later removed, 8 spare torpedoes), 2-10,2cm/4” guns and 1-7,6cm/3” gun.
