A so-called heckschiffe [heck=stern] was the German version of the schooner barges built in Groningen and of which a large number were built by shipyard in the province of Groningen, Netherlands for account of masters living along the German rivers Elbe and Weser. The Meta was built in 1913 by Scheepswerf D. en O. van Diepen, Waterhuizen, Netherlands.
