Japanese transport (ex-Kleist 1906-1921, Yosino Maru 1921-1938) Yosino Maru 1938-1944


Built F. Schichau, Danzig, Germany in 1906 as the Kleist for the North German Lloyd. In 1919 handed over to the The Shipping Controller, London United Kingdom who in 1920 as war reparations handed over Japan, renamed Yoshino Maru in 1921 under management of NYK (Nippon Yusen Kaisha K.K.) which shipping company purchased her in 1929, sold to Kinkai Yusen K.K., Tokyo, renamed Yosino Maru in1939, since 1939 again property of NYK. Used for transporting ammunition and troops. Sunk by the American submarines USS Parche and Steelhead 280 miles north north west off Cape Mayraira, Luzon, Philippines on 31 July 1944. Deadweight 8.680 tons, gross tonnage 8.990 tons and as dimensions 464 (waterline) x 58 x 14 (light)-28 (loaded draught) feet. Speed 13 (normal cruising)-15,9 (maximum). Coal fuelled reciprocating machinery supplying 820 nhp/7,074 ihp at 84rpm. With a coal bunker capacity of 1.365 tons and 13 knots speed was her range 3.800 nautical miles. Twin screw.
