Revenge-class

An item dated St. Jean de Luz 30 April reported that with the arrival of the Resolution there were two British battleships in North Spanish waters. (1) The other was the Royal Oak (2) with the Resolution (3) replacing the cruiser Shropshire.(4)

1. Spanish Civil War between 17 July 1936 and 1 April 1939 resulting in an end of the Second Spanish Republic.
2. Part of the Revenge-class although often referred to as the Royal Sovereign-class or even ‘R‘-class. There were totally 8 ships planned of which two the Renown and Repulse were built using another design as battle cruisers and the third one the Resistance was cancelled. The 5 sister ships were the Royal Oak, Royal Sovereign, Revenge, Ramillies and Resolution. Preceded by the Queen Elisabeth-class and to be succeeded by the planned but never realized N3 class and the realized Nelson-class. Laid down at the Navy Dockyard, Devonport, England on 15 January 1914, launched on 17 November 1914, commissioned on 1 May 1916 and sunk by the German submarine U-47 at Scapa Flow on 14 October 1939. Pennant number 08. Nicknamed The Mighty Oak.

4. Pennant 73, later 83 respectively 96. Of the County-class heavy cruisers London sub-class, preceded by Hawkins-class and succeeded by York-class. Laid down by William Beardmore and Company, Dalmuir, Scotland on 24 February 1927, launched on 5 July 1928, completed on 12 September 1929, commissioned on 24 September 1929, decommissioned on 23 December 1942, handed over the Royal Australian Navy, commissioned on 20 April 1943, decommissioned on 10 November 1949, sold to be broken up on 16 July 1954 arriving at Dalmuir, Scotland on 20 January 1955 towed by the Dutch tug Oostzee.
