The German Hauptausschuss Schiffbau of the Department for armament and ammunition Rud. Blohm wrote on a letter dated Hamburg 23 September 1942 to the Reichskommissar für die Seeschiffahrt. The subject was his voyage between 10-18 September 1942 to the Black Sea area to get an impression of the available docking facilities. It was needed to be as much self-supporting for the maintenance of the navy and merchant ships in the Black Sea but also on the Mediterranean employed. Blohm did not expect much of the support from the friendly or allied countries in the Black Sea. He got the impression that their thoughts and interests were more focused on the after war period. At Varna, Bulgaria there was a floating dry dock of nominally around 4.000 tons at the Koralowag shipyard, although in worst condition and just able to lift 200-300 ton. For the OKM was a 350-500 tons floating dry dock under construction.
