Irish 12 pounder coastal defence gun

National Museum of Ireland, Dublin

Example of the guns used by the Republic Ireland to protect the so-called Treaty Ports during the Second World War. The deep water ports Berehaven, Queenstown (Cobh) and Lough Swilly were retained by the United Kingdom under the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 6 December 1921. In the First World War German submarines were very active off the Irish coasts and the United Kingdom wanted to prepare for a rehearsal. In 1938 however the ports were handed over to Ireland.
