The so-called Bantry Boat or longboat of French frigate La Résolue captured in 1798

National Museum of Ireland, Dublin

In December 1796 tried France to invade Ireland by landing troops in the Bantry Bay. One of the warships involved was the French frigate La Résolue which lost her masts in a collision. Her longboat was lowered and commanded by lieutenant Proteau to search for a ship which could tow the La Résolue to safety. He failed however and was taken prisoner of war when the longboat was driven ashore. The La Résolue (built 1777-1778) was involved in the battle of Tory Island on 12 October 1798 and captured next day by the British HMS Melampus.
