American whaler Emma C. Jones leaving Port Russell, New Zealand according to the New Zealand newspaper Daily Southern Cross dated 28 June 1873

Fishermen in boats have been attacking a whale but one boat is upset and a man is falling out.

An item reported the departure from the port of Russell, New Zealand on 11 June by the whaler Emma C. Jones, ship, captain Clifford for the whaling grounds.(1) The James Arnold bound for New Bedford, USA toke over 300 barrels from her. (2)

1. Whalemen's Shipping List dated 8 April 1873 reported as homeport New Bedford, USA, of 307 tons, master Gifford, agents William Watkins, departure on 11 July 1871.

2.  Whalemen's Shipping List dated 8 April 1873 reported as homeport New Bedford, USA, of 346 tons, master Briggs, agents Taber, Gordon&Co., departure on 12 October 1869.
