An item reported that in the afternoon and evening of 27 February a Japanese force of 40 transports protected by 6 cruisers and 20 destroyers made contact with an Allied naval force (1) consisting of 5 cruisers and 10 destroyers near Bawean Island, north of Surabaya, Dutch East Indies. The troops on board of the transports were to land on the north coast of the island Java. The Japanese cruisers supported by 9 of their destroyers prevented an Allied attack on the transports. In doing so the Japanese lost at least a Mogami-class cruisers and 3 losses. The Allied losses were much heavier with loosing 2 Dutch cruisers, 1 Dutch and 2 British destroyers. (1) A British cruiser was badly damaged, the American cruiser slightly. The invasion however was cancelled and the transports went to the north.

Note

1. This was the ill-fated Allied ABDA striking force commanded by the Dutch rear admiral Karel Doorman. The lost Dutch cruisers were Hr.Ms. De Ruyter and Java, the British cruiser was HMS Exeter and the American cruiser USS Houston. There was also an Australian cruiser HMAS Perth added to this squadron. All Allied cruisers were lost between 27 February and 1 March. The Japanese did not loose a cruiser.
