Japanese cruiser Kako sunk by American submarine USS S-44 according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 25 August 1942

An item reported that on 10 August an American submarine sunk a Japanese Kako-class 7,100 tons 6-8” guns cruiser off Simberi Island north of New Ireland.(1)

Note

1. The Furutaka-class heavy cruiser Kako was sunk on 10 August 1942 after the Battle of Savo Islands by the American submarine USS S-44, laid down under the 1923 Fiscal Year by Kobe-Kawasaki Shipbuilding Yard on 17 November 1922, launched on 4 April 1925 and commissioned on 20 July 1926. Displacement 7,100 (standard)-9,450 (full load) tons and main armament of 6x1-20cm/7.9” guns.
