French protected cruiser Bugeaud 1892-1906

Part of the Friant-class protected cruisers, preceded by Alger class and succeeded by Linois class, building ordered under the 1890 program on 29 January 1891, laid down at Arsenal de Cherbourg, France on 5 April 1892, launched on 29 August 1893, commissioned on 24 June 1896, decommissioned on 26 October 1905, stricken on 9 April 1906, sold for 300,000 francs and broken up at Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Netherlands. The Dutch newspaper De Courant dated 19 February 1907 published an item dated Rotterdam 18 February reporting that the Dutch tug Zwarte Zee was underway to Rochefort, France to pick up the Bugeaud.  

 Displacement 3,771 tons and as dimensions 97.5 (over all) x 13.24 x 5,84 metres or 319.11 x 43.5 x 19.2 feet. The propulsion consisted of 2 triple expansion steam engines and 20 coal fuelled water tube boilers supplying via 2 screws 9,000 ihp allowing a speed of 18.86 (trial) knots and a range if 6,000 nautical miles/10 knots. Crew numbered 331 men. The armament consisted of 6x1-16.4cm/6.5” guns, 4x1-10cm/3.9”guns, 4x1-4.7cm/1.9” guns, 11x1-3.7cm/1.5”/3pd guns and 2x1-35cm/14” torpedo tubes. The armour consisted of a 3cm/1.2”-8cm/3.1” thick deck and the conning tower was protected by 7.5cm/3”.
